Here are a couple of snapshots that I keep on my fridge. I mentioned previously that I was going to be doing a couple of lap quilts for my siblings, and these sweet kids are them. You couldn’t ask for more caring, lovable siblings. Matt is going to be in 6th grade, and will be 12 next month. Josie will be in 4th grade and she is 9.
I’ve started on Josie’s quilt first. She’s painting her room apple green (like my room at the Hyde St. Apt), likes the color blue, and isn’t a big “girly girl” – so I wanted to keep it simple. Like always, I start with a general sketch:

Then on one Friday afternoon I made a trip to Black Cat Quilts (a review of this experience to follow). I picked some fabrics that went with my general theme. I’ll admit that I had a tricky time finding the right greens. I wanted them to be bright and fresh, but not neon. I also wanted something with pattern, to draw the eye in, and wasn’t completely successful in that endeavor either.
Here’s what I came up with:

And after an afternoon of sewing, I made some significant progress. Now I just have to buy the border and backing fabric and I am kind of a little bit stumped. I definitely want something with a BOLD print because the rest of the quilt is pretty simple. Looks like I’ll be making a trip to New Pieces!

More progress to follow soon!

I really like the contrast in the light green strip against the dark green on the second to right stripe. It sounds like you want to make the greens “pop.” To do that, try using colors directly opposite on the color wheel http://www.faceters.com/askjeff/images/color_wheel1.jpg
It may seem strange to use purple/red/orange with green, but when you use colors from the wheel that are right next to each other, they will complement each other, but they’ll all sort of blend together (if you’re painting, the muddy the color). Just a thought to get your creative juices flowing for the background.

You have some very cute pictures on your fridge. I especially love the picture with the three of you in goggles. Very vogue. The quilt is turning out beautiful. I love the combinations of greens.
