Handmade Bohemian Maxi with Anna Maria Horner Fabrics

Having successfully completed the zig zag quilt for Alexis and Ed, I just couldn’t let the obsession go. I can’t take credit for the construction of the gorgeous dress that follows, because I mostly just sat in a rocking chair and talked while Suz did the sewing. But, i looove it, and can’t wait to wear it somewhere special!

First: The original dress and inspiration on Anna Maria Horner’s blog.

Second, the finished dress! Can you believe how close it is to the original? She did SUCH an amazing job. The craziest part is that there was no pattern for the dress, so it’s kind of a modification and a hodge podge. I love that Suz is always up for a challenge. Do you think it’s fancy enough for a beach wedding? Comments welcome!

1st off: Jess…DO NOT read any further unless you want a spoiler.

2nd off: I had such a nice time putting this quilt together. I had surgery on Monday, and my mom was in town helping me get better. So nice to get to spend some quality time with her. My mom and stepdad (aka papa) came into town on Friday, and this is the primary project that we worked on.

I got really lucky and bought these moda prints a year ago on major sale…and of course just now got the top pieced together. Pattern is the Charming Log Cabin pattern from Threaded Pear. Scalloped edges won’t be done until the actual quilting is done. I think it’s going to be the perfect finishing touch.

Thanks for all your help, mom. I miss you already!

Mom, you’re the best.

It was made to go with our thread catchers. I happened to have a little bit of fabric left over.

I used the whip up tutorial, and it was VERY easy. Only two concerns: 1) I filled the pincushion with sand…because it sharpens needles, but I think the sand I purchased was way too fine. I did a test, and it seems to be okay as long as you use the felt side to stick the pins in and 2) the perfectionist in me is a little too concerned that my “petals” are not perfectly spaced and centered (gasp!). I guess it adds to the handmade charm.

Made by Suz for Jeff and Lila’s wedding. The quilting design on this quilt is from the Kansas City Star circa the mid-1930’s. Suz managed to get access to TONS of original Kansas City Star patterns. In case the Kansas City Star doesn’t ring any bells for you, from 1928 to 1961 The Kansas City Star published more than 1,000 quilt patterns, establishing a legacy known around the world. Let me tell you: they are so neat (words failing me here). Suz made me a copy of all her originals.

Anjou Quilt: Ready for Quilting!

I just love it! Too many wedding quilts coming up though, and it’ll be awhile before I get to this one…pics here appear in reverse order from sandwiched to pre-sandwiching with a cute little cat named Ingrid involved.

This marks the first completely joint project between me and Suz (a.k.a mom). The best part about it is that we made it completely from mom’s stash — we didn’t have to spend any money!

Suz alerted me to this cool new product (it’s on her Christmas wish list). If your bobbin winder is broken, no longer do you have to worry about taking it in for an expensive repair. Don’t want to worry about re-threading? The portable bobbin winder is the perfect solution.
